Side effects of black mold

Every year, according to the National Weather Service, flooding causes more than $8 billion in property damage across the United States. With the weather expected to become only more severe as the climate continues to change, climatologists with FloodSmart.gov write, dangerous, life-altering flash floods are expected to increase in frequency in all 50 states.

Luckily, these flash floods cause mostly property damage, though they do take no fewer than 89 American lives every year, at least directly. Indirectly, however, the issues leftover by severe flooding can be no less dangerous. Of these, toxic mold infestation must be said to be the most perilous.

As inclement weather has become more common across the country, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, so, too, have moisture loving mold spores. Mold from water damage can be every bit as life threatening as the floods that cause it. With these tips for spotting an infestation, you’ll know when you need a mold inspection, helping you to nip the problem in the bud before it causes you any lasting health issues.

Three Signs You Need to Call in a Mold Damage Restoration Service

  • Something Doesn’t Smell Quite Right
  • For SF Gate, an online newspaper based in the City by the Bay, one of the first signs you may need to bring in a professional mold inspection and remediation service is the smell of putrefaction. Rotting leaves, pond water, decaying vegetation — if you smell these things no matter how much you clean, chances are you have a mold problem.

  • Sudden Onset Illness
  • If you’re a typically healthy person without a history of respiratory conditions, yet you suddenly develop allergies or asthma like problems, there is a good chance mold has taken hold in your home. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlight, toxic mold severely affects our respiratory symptoms. Typically, this leads to coughing, sneezing, and wheezing, but in extreme cases, it can lead to death. If your sickness comes and goes as you leave and return home, call a mold inspection team.

  • Discoloration of Your Walls, Ceilings
  • Despite its name, black mold can take on any number of hues ranging from a sickly green to a deep blue black. This full range of coloration makes it easy to spot a mold infestation in homes. Discolored patches coming through the paint on the walls or streaks of strangely colored lines that don’t easily rub off of your ceiling are pretty clear indicators there is an issue, as HowStuffWorks points out.
